Maple,
Interesting question. Most major metro areas have disocunt music stores like Mars, Guitar Center, etc. They all carry low-mid-high end stuff and can recommend a good starter bass for pretty cheap. I personally prefer a locally owned shop, where the staff turns over less and is more likely to know your first name when you come back for strings and what not. If you get out and look, and play a few basses, I bet you will find what you need. You can't go wrong with a Fender, and the offshore ones are pretty affordable.
I have a 5-string Fender Jazz bass but my main axe is a 6-string Alembic. More $$ than you want to spend but I've been doing this for a while (to say the least!)
