The first thing that came to mind is the Musicians Friend Web site and catalog : http://www.musiciansfriend.com/. They have a good assortment of quality instruments at competitive prices. I have not ordered a bass from them, but their service and suport are good.
Personally, I have been playing a custom made Left handed 5-string Fender Jazz bass for 14 years. Being a lefty, there were not too many 5-strings on the shelves 14-15 years ago. Still not too good, but I'm searching for a reasonable 6-string.
