Regarding some other Jamerson basslines to listen to, Yesterday I heard "I Can't Get Next To You" by the Temptations and it is an excellent example of Jamerson's eventiveness on an otherwise simple chord structure and melody. There is a device that Chuck Rainey called a "Buscuit Drop" where the bassist drops an octave in a hoping movement that I explain orally is "Dippity-dom" and then there are the ways he walks back to the tonic. These are not scientific terms but Jamerson had a way of restating the buscuit drop as dippy-dom-dom that is prevelent in this record and is one of his signature licks I would call the whole phrase: dippy-dom-dom, a-dompy-dom-dom-dippa... (just say it and it might make sense). I guess you could call this Bass Ebonics <G>
